ROAD DEVELOPMENT
The 1st. Outline Perspective Plan (OPPI) from 1971 - 1990, known also as the New Economic Plan (NEP) saw a challenge to the Government in providing a good road infrastructural network throughout the country. In achieving the NEP objectives amongst other thing are to increase the economic statur and to promote development of the rural and under developed regions of the country.
During this period the priority was to implement numerous roadprojects in the rural and under-develop regions of the country so as to facilitate and accelerate the development and to tap the economic potential of these regional.
The 2nd. Outline Perpective Plan (OPP2) from 1991-2000 demands different function of roads in the development of the nation. This Plan whick encompassers the Sixth and Seventh Malaysia Plan, gives the emphasis on improving the inset-urban lingkages and alleviate transport related problemsarising from rapid urbansation of major towns and cities.
In additions to providing a huge budget for the construction of new road links upgrading the capacity of the existing road network and the construction of 'ring roads; in urban centers, the Government also proceeded with the [rivitisation of new roads.
In the coming decade the role of our roads will indeed become even more [rominent as the main mode of transport for freight and passengers in the country. The Highway Network Development Plan (HNDP) study, which was conducted in 1991, proposed a road network configuration for Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah to sustain the ever increasing demand for a good. reliable and efficient road network system in striving towards becoming an industrialised nation by the year 2020.
