From the Highway Network Development Plan Study conducted in 1991, Peninsular Malaysia shows three (3) distint links that are heavily trafficked ie. the north-south trun road on the West Coast (FR01), the north-south trunk road on the East-Coast (FR03), and the West-East link from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan (FR02).
For Sarawak, the road linking Seri Aman to Kuching was identified as the most trafficked road.
For Sabah, the main routes having appreaciable volume of traffic are the Kota Kinabalu-Keningau and Lahad Datu-Tawau links.
The Highway Planning Unit (HPU) conducts traffic surveys with the assistance of the State PWDs, District Engineers and Local Authorities. Traffic data are recorded and analysed for the planning of new roads, upgrading of existing road network and the design of highways and traffic control devices. Traffic cencus (manual classified counts) for a duration of either one or seven days is carried out twice a year in April and October at 521 stations throughout Malaysia. In addition, 35 permenant classified traffic counts record 365 day, 24 hour traffic volumes.
Theres has been a tremendous increase in the vehicle registration during the last decade in the country. For the period of 1977 to 1994, the total number of registered vehicle has increased from 1.78 million vehicles in 1977 to 7.21 milllion vehicles in 1994 respectively, with an averrage rate of 7.4% per annum.
Motorcycles represent about 55%. followed by cars with 34% and about 7% are van and heavy goods vehicles.
